National Desk | Former Law Minister Kapil Sibal took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks on Uniform Civil Code (UCC), questioning how “equal” his proposal is and whether Hindus, tribals and the Northeast all come under its purview. . In fact, Prime Minister Modi strongly advocated UCC in Bhopal on Tuesday and said that the Constitution talks about equal rights for all citizens.
The Prime Minister also accused the opposition parties of using the UCC issue to mislead and incite Muslims. Sibal, a Rajya Sabha member, tweeted on Wednesday, “PM stresses on Uniform Civil Code…accuses opposition of inciting Muslims…First question, why this thing after nine years? 2024 (for election)? Second question, how ‘uniform’ is your proposal, tribals and NE all come under it? Third question, every day your party targets Muslims. Why? Now you are worried.
The Law Commission had on June 14 initiated the process of fresh consultations on the UCC and had asked stakeholders including public and recognized religious organizations to explain their views on the politically sensitive issue by July 13.
