Khammam: There is good news for students of erstwhile Khammam district as the much-awaited District Science Museum and District Science Centre is ready and will be opened soon. Work related to setting up science exhibits is underway at the museum located in the old DEO Office on Trunk Road in Khammam. 27 exhibits related to biology, science, physics, mathematics and recreational objects have been purchased from Hyderabad-based scientific exhibit provider GP Birla. Rs 56.75 lakh has been spent on setting up the museum. Rs 40 lakh was spent on purchasing exhibits and Rs 16.75 lakh on renovation of the old DEO office. The education department has tied up with BM Birla Science Museum in Hyderabad to design and create science museum exhibits.
Speaking to Telangana Today, District Science Officer Dussa Jagadeeswar said that the work on the science centre is going on at a fast pace and it will be opened by the end of July. Former Science Officer Saidulu, District Education Officer E. Somashekar Sharma and the district administration made special efforts in setting up the science centre. The museum will play a vital role in creating awareness and interest in science among the student community as well as popularising science. Jagadeeswar said the items displayed in the museum are interactive and participatory and they will make learning fun for students. DEO Somashekar Sharma said efforts are being made to open the science centre as soon as possible and it will be a great asset for students. After the centre is inaugurated, science tours will be organised for students to visit it. It is worth noting that a Hyderabad-based firm Nuvosol Energy Private Limited contributed Rs 20 lakh to the museum under its CSR initiative. The science museum was approved in 2008 and in 2014, the district administration restarted efforts to set up the museum.
