SAD officially accepts Sukhbir Singh Badal’s resignation

Punjab: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Working Committee has officially accepted Sukhbir Singh Badal’s resignation from the post of party president following the Akal Takht’s directive. Badal had initially submitted his resignation on November 16, 2024, but its acceptance was delayed due to internal party deliberations. The resignation was finally formalised after the Akal Takht Jathedar urged party leaders to implement necessary reforms, which forced the Working Committee to bow before the religious authority. The decision was confirmed by Shiromani Akali Dal spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema after the Working Committee meeting on Friday.

Badal’s resignation was accepted after internal debate within the party, where the leadership initially expressed concern about the clash of Akal Takht’s directives with the party’s secular constitution and political registration. However, the religious body’s call for organisational change finally led to the resignation being accepted. Sukhbir Badal expressed gratitude to party workers and leadership for the support. “The SAD delegate session entrusted me with the responsibility of leading the party. In the last five years, I have given my best to serve the party. After completing my tenure, I had submitted my resignation to the working committee. However, due to some reasons, it was not accepted earlier. Now I have submitted my resignation again to clear the way for the election of a new party chief.
