Thanjavur: The state has issued orders to pay Rs 16.85 crore as relief to 22,533 farmers of the Cauvery delta who lost Kuruvai due to deficient rainfall and inadequate release of water from the Mettur dam during the south-west monsoon. .
G.O. issued on 13 February. As per the funds are being released from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
According to calculations done in the four delta districts of Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur, yield loss in about 12,484 hectares was more than 33%.
After this the government issued orders to release Rs 16.85 crore as relief. Farmers will get a relief of Rs 13,500 per hectare.
Of the four districts, Nagapattinam was the worst affected, as paddy cultivation in 12,125 hectares by 21,816 farmers was destroyed. Farmers of the district will get a total relief of Rs 16.73 crore.
A total of 623 farmers in Thiruvarur will get a total of Rs 38.47 lakh for paddy loss over 285 hectares, where yield loss was more than 33%.
The government order said 77 farmers in Thanjavur district will get a total relief of Rs 7.52 lakh, while 17 farmers in Mayiladuthurai district will get a total relief of Rs 2.38 lakh. It is noteworthy that following the demands of the farmers whose crops were ruined due to Karnataka not releasing Cauvery water, Chief Minister MK Stalin had announced a compensation of Rs 13,500 per hectare on October 5, 2023.
