Rising earthquake risk in Uttarakhand; energy accumulated beneath the earth raises concerns.

UTTARAKHAND: Scientists have once again expressed concern regarding the possibility of a major earthquake in the entire central Himalayan region, including Uttarakhand. Recent geological studies indicate that immense energy is accumulating between tectonic plates at depths of up to approximately 180 kilometers beneath the Himalayas; this energy could trigger a massive earthquake in the future. Experts state that this energy has been building up as pressure beneath the Earth’s surface over a long period, and its sudden release could impact several states in North India, including Uttarakhand.

According to geologists, the Himalayas are among the youngest mountain ranges in the world and continue to evolve. The primary reason for this is the ongoing collision between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. The Indian Plate is moving northward at a rate of approximately 4 to 5 centimeters per year and subducting (sliding) beneath the Eurasian Plate. This process causes continuous stress accumulation within the Himalayas.

Why is concern growing?
Scientists note that the Himalayan region has not experienced a truly powerful earthquake in several decades—one capable of fully releasing the vast amount of accumulated energy. This is why the area is referred to as a “Seismic Gap.” When a region does not experience a major earthquake for an extended period, energy continues to build up there.

Experts state that friction and pressure between the plates are steadily increasing in the zone extending up to 180 kilometers beneath the Himalayas. If this accumulated stress is suddenly released, an earthquake measuring 8 or higher on the Richter scale is a possibility.

Uttarakhand among the most vulnerable states
Uttarakhand is already classified as one of India’s states most vulnerable to earthquakes. A large portion of the state falls within Seismic Zones IV and V, areas where there is a high probability of experiencing high-intensity earthquakes. Districts such as Dehradun, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Almora, and Tehri are considered particularly vulnerable. The 1991 Uttarkashi earthquake and the 1999 Chamoli earthquake serve as examples of the seismic activity in this region.

What does the new study say?
Recent research conducted by seismologists utilized modern seismic imaging, GPS data, satellite observations, and analysis of the Earth’s internal structure. The study found that the Indian Plate is subducting to a relatively great depth beneath the Himalayas and that, in several locations, the stress accumulated between the plates exceeds normal levels.

Researchers state that while these findings do not definitively prove the occurrence of a major earthquake in the future, they clearly indicate the presence of high levels of seismic energy in the region, necessitating continuous monitoring.

Is a major earthquake imminent?
Scientists have clarified that predicting the exact date, time, and location of an earthquake is beyond the capabilities of current science. Therefore, it would be incorrect to claim that a major earthquake will certainly occur on a specific day or in the near future.

However, geologists believe that the potential for a major earthquake remains due to the energy that has been accumulating in the Himalayan region over a long period. For this reason, prioritizing disaster management and earthquake-resistant construction is crucial.

What to do during an earthquake?
Experts advise moving to a safe location immediately rather than panicking when an earthquake strikes. If you are inside a building, take shelter under a sturdy table or desk and stay away from windows, heavy cupboards, and elevators. If you are in an open area, keep a safe distance from electric poles, trees, and buildings.

Have an emergency plan ready for all family members. Keep items such as a flashlight, first-aid kit, drinking water, dry food, a mobile charger, and essential documents in a safe place at home.

Disaster management preparedness is essential
Experts believe that in mountainous states like Uttarakhand, merely studying earthquakes is not enough. Strict adherence to building codes, the strengthening of old structures, periodic mock drills, ensuring the safety of schools and hospitals, and raising public awareness are equally essential.

National and state-level agencies are continuously monitoring seismic activity. Scientists are studying subtle changes occurring in the Himalayan region using modern sensors, GPS networks, and earthquake monitoring centers to better understand future risks.
