Restoration of Assam-Mizoram railway track delayed due to flood in Dhaleswari River

Assam: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced that restoration of the crucial interstate railway track connecting Assam and Mizoram will begin only when the water level in the Dhaleshwari river, which has risen alarmingly due to incessant rains, recedes sufficiently. This crucial railway service connecting the states was badly disrupted due to heavy rains, which led to extensive soil erosion, affecting the stability of the track. The erosion near Kilarbak, about 60 km from Hailakandi town, has made the track unsafe for use. In response to the damage, the NFR has resumed the passenger train service, which usually runs between Bairabi and Silchar in Mizoram via Hailakandi. The train now runs only between Silchar and Bairabi in Hailakandi, about 23 km from Silchar. As a result, passengers travelling towards Mizoram are currently forced to alight at Jamira, from where they have to complete the rest of their journey by bus. This disruption has caused considerable inconvenience to passengers as the erosion has washed away the soil supporting the railway track, making it unfit for further rail operations until proper repairs are made.
