Around 250 children from Jharia in Dhanbad district gathered at a children’s park in Jharia on Sunday to highlight the pollution of the coal city.
He created a painting on the theme “Pollution of Jharia” in a competition organized by two voluntary organizations – Youth Concept and Green Life – which have been active for the last few years in addressing the issue.
“This is one of a series of events organized recently to highlight the alarming levels of pollution in Jharia,” said Akhlaq Ahmed, convener of Youth Concept. He said he had also organized a race for clean air earlier this month.
He had also recently organized a Satyagraha (dharna) and a seminar on Vayu Mitra, he added, adding that Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy, who is very active on environmental issues, had delivered the keynote address at the seminar.
Jharia, a coal town about 10 km from district headquarters Dhanbad, topped the list of the most polluted cities in the country when Greenpeace India conducted a survey and published its report in 2019.
Of the 313 cities surveyed at that time, Jharia was found to be the most polluted where PM (particulate matter) 10 levels were recorded at 295 micrograms per cubic metre, followed by district headquarters Dhanbad at 264 micrograms per cubic metre. .
In another survey report in June 2022, the Air Quality of Life Index (AQLI) in Jharkhand was ranked eighth in the country.
The children participating in the program tried to highlight the pollution scenario as much as possible by drawing their feelings.
