Puri Jagannath Temple administrators protest untimely Rath Yatra in Hapur, UP, write to collector

Odisha: The Shri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) in Puri, Odisha, has objected to the early Rath Yatra celebrations proposed by a religious organization in Hapur district, Uttar Pradesh. The temple administration has written to the Hapur district administration, requesting them to take necessary action and ensure that the events are held in accordance with established religious traditions.
According to reports, the Shri Jagannath Rath Yatra Seva Samiti in Hapur has planned to hold the Netrotsav on June 13th and the Rath Yatra on June 14th. Regarding this proposed event, the temple administration has clarified that these events are not in accordance with the traditional religious calendar and classical traditions.
Arbind Kumar Padhi, Chief Administrator of the Shri Jagannath Temple Administration, stated in his letter that media reports suggest that the events are being planned on dates that are inconsistent with established traditions. He added that in Puri, Lord Jagannath’s Netrotsav is traditionally celebrated on July 14th, while the Rath Yatra is held on July 16th.
The letter also stated that conducting these sacred rituals at any time other than the dates prescribed in religious traditions and scriptures could hurt the religious sentiments of millions of devotees of Lord Jagannath, both in India and abroad. The temple administration, describing the matter as serious, requested the local administration to take appropriate action.
The SJTA stated that the Jagannath Rath Yatra is not merely a religious event, but an important festival rooted in centuries-old tradition and faith, which must be observed according to the prescribed dates and rituals. Any change is not only against tradition but could also create confusion among devotees.
There has been no official response from the Hapur district administration on this matter. However, the temple administration’s letter has sparked heated discussion on the controversy, with varying reactions being seen among religious organizations and devotees.
At the local level, this issue has now become a significant topic of discussion regarding religious sensitivity and adherence to tradition. The temple administration has expressed hope that the district administration will take appropriate steps in this matter and ensure that religious events are conducted as per tradition.
