CM Yogi to provide respect and support to weavers.
Lucknow. The state-level event scheduled for Friday in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, to mark National Handloom Day holds special significance for the state’s weavers and artisans associated with the handloom industry. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will attend the ‘Sant Kabir State-Level Handloom Award’ distribution ceremony at the Lok Bhawan auditorium as the chief guest. On this occasion, he will honor weavers and artisans from the handloom sector for their outstanding work and present financial assistance checks to beneficiaries of various government schemes.
The event is being organized to commemorate National Handloom Day, with the aim of promoting the state’s traditional handloom industry, recognizing the excellent work of weavers, and connecting those working in this sector with government schemes. Senior officials from the Handloom and Textile Department, public representatives, weaver organizations, industry representatives, and a large number of beneficiaries will also be present.
During the ceremony, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will present the Sant Kabir State-Level Handloom Awards for the financial year 2026-27. These awards are conferred upon weavers and artisans who have made significant contributions to traditional weaving arts, design innovation, the creation of excellent products, and the preservation and promotion of the handloom industry. Through these awards, the government not only honors talented artisans but also seeks to inspire the new generation to engage with this traditional art form.
At the event, the Chief Minister will distribute financial assistance checks to beneficiaries of the ‘Chief Minister Handloom and Powerloom Industry Development Scheme.’ This scheme provides financial aid for the modernization of handloom and powerloom units, increasing production capacity, adopting new technologies, and fostering self-employment. The government’s objective through this scheme is to boost weavers’ incomes and enhance the competitiveness of the state’s textile industry.
Additionally, the Chief Minister will hand over checks to beneficiaries of the ‘Jhalkari Bai Handloom and Powerloom Development Scheme.’ This scheme is specifically implemented to encourage economically disadvantaged weaver families, women artisans, and small entrepreneurs. The scheme promotes the procurement of modern equipment, the expansion of production units, and job creation.
Uttar Pradesh is one of the country’s leading states for handloom and textile production. Products such as the Banarasi sarees of Varanasi, textiles from Mau, the weaving crafts of Tanda, and traditional items from Azamgarh, Barabanki, and other regions hold a distinct identity both domestically and internationally. Lakhs of families depend—directly or indirectly—on the handloom industry. Consequently, the government periodically implements various schemes and incentive programs to strengthen this sector.
National Handloom Day is observed annually on August 7th to highlight the significance of the Indian handloom industry and to honor the contributions of the weaving community. Various events are organized across the country on this occasion, placing special emphasis on honoring weavers, providing market access for their products, and integrating modern technology into their craft.
The state government maintains that the handloom and powerloom industries play a vital role in strengthening the rural economy, creating jobs, and preserving traditional craftsmanship. With this objective in mind, continuous efforts are being made to provide weavers with financial assistance, training, modern machinery, design development support, marketing aid, and access to digital platforms.
During the event, departmental officials are expected to present information regarding the progress of schemes, welfare programs for weavers, and future action plans. Additionally, the state’s rich weaving heritage will be showcased through exhibitions of handloom products and displays of traditional textiles.
