Punjab: Light to moderate rainfall occurring just before the onset of the monsoon season has exposed the deficiencies in the city’s drainage system. Several key hotspots across the city have become waterlogged, causing significant inconvenience to local residents. According to the Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain fell in various areas over the past 24 hours, leading to increased water pressure in drains and drainage channels. Citizens have complained that commuting has been disrupted in several locations due to waterlogging and muddy conditions. Market areas and densely populated localities, in particular, have been the worst affected by this rainfall.
The local administration stated that while this event constituted normal pre-monsoon rainfall, it has made it abundantly clear that the drainage system requires immediate improvement. Water failed to drain properly in many areas due to blockages and the accumulation of waste in drains and drainage pipes. A municipal corporation official remarked, “We have identified several hotspots. Currently, pumping and drainage operations are underway. We appeal to citizens to exercise caution in these areas, as the rainwater may render the roads slippery.”
Local residents are also distressed by the situation. One citizen commented, “The rainfall was quite light, yet the roads became submerged. This has adversely impacted our daily lives and businesses. The administration needs to prioritize strengthening the drainage infrastructure.” Experts suggest that such waterlogging occurring prior to the monsoon season indicates an urgent need to focus specifically on the cleaning and maintenance of the city’s drains and drainage network. They noted that regular inspections, proper sanitation, and timely repair work could significantly mitigate this problem.
In response, the Municipal Corporation stated that, as part of their monsoon preparedness measures, they would prioritize the repair and cleaning of drains and the overall drainage system. Officials also announced that a special task force would be deployed in waterlogged areas to ensure a swift response in the event of an emergency. Citizens have also taken to social media to share photographs of the waterlogging and traffic disruptions, thereby mounting pressure on the administration to take immediate remedial action. Citizens state that the administration needs to take concrete steps in this regard before the monsoon, so that the general public does not have to face difficulties during heavy rainfall.
