Punjab: Two young men from Budhlada in Mansa district were shot dead in southeast Edmonton, Canada, in the early hours of Friday. Police believe it was a targeted attack. The deceased have been identified as 27-year-old Gurdeep Singh from Bareh village and 20-year-old Ranvir Singh from Uddat Saidewala village. Both had gone to Canada in search of better career opportunities. According to information given to their families by Gurdeep’s cousin Arshdeep, they were going to celebrate a friend’s birthday with some friends when some unknown assailants suddenly opened fire on their SUV.
In a media release, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) stated that they received a report of a shooting at approximately 1:43 a.m. on Friday in the area of 32 Street and 26 Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Police attempted life-saving measures until Emergency Medical Services arrived, but both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The EPS Homicide Section has taken over the investigation, and autopsies will be conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday. Police are looking for a dark-colored SUV that may have been in the area at the time of the shooting. Investigators are urging anyone who lives in the area of Silverberry Road and 23 Avenue, as well as 34 Street and 29 Street, and has dashcam or security footage from Thursday afternoon between 2 p.m. and Friday morning at 2:30 a.m., to contact the police. Ranveer was his parents’ only child.
Ranveer’s uncle, Mandeep Gill, said, “My nephew had gone to Canada on a study visa and was living in Brampton. He wanted to go to the US and had gone to Calgary for an interview. From there, he went to Edmonton to stay with a friend at his invitation. He was driving when some assailants opened fire. Ranveer was his parents’ only child. He had no enmity with anyone. The attackers must have come to target someone else. Ranveer died from a gunshot wound, while Gurdeep, who was sitting next to him, reportedly died of shock.”
Gurdeep was supposed to come to India next month.
The other victim, Gurdeep, had been married for about five years and was planning to come to India next month. His uncle, Darshan Singh, said, “Gurdeep’s wife had also applied to go to Canada. But fate had other plans. We spoke to him on the phone just two hours before the shooting. My son Arshdeep was also with him. He told us that Gurdeep was not shot, but died of shock. We appeal to both the state and central governments to help us bring his body back. His parents only own three to four acres of land.”
