Punjab: Tractor rallies, farmers target AAP government over land acquisition proposal

Punjab: Farmers affiliated to various unions that form the Samyukta Kisan Morcha have started tractor rallies in villages across Punjab to protest against the proposed acquisition of land under the state government’s land acquisition policy. The biggest show of strength by farmers is being seen in Ludhiana district, where 45,861 acres of land is proposed to be acquired. This includes 24,311 acres of land for residential purposes and 21,550 acres for setting up industrial areas.

SKM leader Balbir Singh Rajewal told The Tribune that tractor rallies have been planned in several places in Ludhiana district, including Kumkalan, Balian, Dakha, Jodha and Jagraon. “This will be the biggest march so far in recent times, as people in rural areas want to show their anger against the attempt to take over their fertile lands and evict them from their homes,” he said. Tractor rallies have been planned in 116 villages across the state.
