Punjab: Registrar of Patiala Law University suspended

Punjab: Rajiv Gandhi National Law University (RGNUL) vice-chancellor Jai Shankar Singh on Wednesday suspended registrar Anand Pawar for financial irregularities besides misuse of his position and power. The action was taken following an inquiry. The report, a copy of which is with The Tribune, said Pawar had taken up the task of supervising PhD candidates in 2023 and 2024. “As per RGNUL rules, the supervisor of a post-doctoral research candidate should be a professor with a doctoral degree and experience of guiding at least five researchers,” the report said.

Pawar was the registrar and not a professor, so he was not entitled to act as a supervisor of researchers. Pawar was not available for comment. The inquiry report said he held the post of vice-chancellor from February 27, 2023, to March 27, 2024. During that period, he favoured his second wife, who is an associate professor at the university. The report mentioned that there were also complaints of sexual harassment against him. Moreover, he married a second time with an associate professor at the university while the matrimonial suit with his first wife was still pending in court. Pawar has been asked to mark his attendance at the office of the Dean (Academics) during the suspension period.
