Punjab: Computer teachers in Sangrur have been agitating since September 1, their protest intensified on Diwali when they burnt an effigy of the state government led by CM Bhagwant Mann. Their relay hunger strike outside the deputy commissioner’s office has now reached the 62nd day, with teachers from various districts, including Hoshiarpur, participating. These teachers, many of whom have devoted nearly two decades to government schools, are demanding transfer from the Punjab Information and Communication Technology Education Society (PICTES) to the Punjab Education Department. They are also demanding implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations and revision of their dearness allowance, which has not been adjusted in three years.
Prominent leaders of the agitation, including Johnny Singla, Nardeep Sharma and Navjot Singh, expressed disappointment over the government’s apathy towards their plight. They highlighted that tragically 104 computer teachers have died while no financial assistance has been provided to their bereaved families. They are demanding jobs for the families of the deceased as assistance from the government. The protesters said if their demands were not addressed soon, they would further intensify their agitation by organising big rallies against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during the upcoming by-elections in Barnala, Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak and Chabbewal. They said their aim was to hold the state government accountable and raise awareness about their struggles during these events.
