Punjab: Programs to mark Guru’s 350th martyrdom anniversary begin today

Punjab: The holy city of Anandpur Sahib has become a spiritual hub as the Punjab government begins three days of commemorative events tomorrow to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. “Nagar Kirtans” (songs) from nearby towns and historic gurdwaras (pilgrimages), and devotional songs resonate throughout the city, filling the air with reverence and festive spirit. Central to these events is Guru Ka Bagh, the revered headquarters of the Baba Budha Dal Nihang sect, where the eagerly awaited “Sarva Dharam Sammelan” will be held. The Punjab government has erected a large white tent complex at the site, symbolizing unity and sanctity, where continuous recitation of Gurbani will begin Sunday. The serene atmosphere of Guru Ka Bagh has already begun to draw devotees, Nihang warriors, and families, who have arrived early to be part of this historic event. Preparations are in full swing at the venue. Nihang organizations, local service groups, and government-funded volunteers organize a large langar (cooked langar) to serve thousands of devotees daily.
The rows of ‘degh’ (large cauldrons), temporary kitchens, and covered dining areas reflect the traditional Sikh spirit of hospitality and service, which this event aims to uphold. According to official sources, the ‘Sarva Dharam Sammelan’ will be attended by renowned spiritual figures from various faiths. Highlights are expected to include global spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, as well as heads of various Nihang sects from Punjab and surrounding states. Their presence will connect memories across diverse religions, further strengthening the legacy of Guru Tegh Bahadur, who sacrificed his life to protect religious freedom. However, despite the grandeur of this government-organized event, the participation of senior Sikh clergy is not yet confirmed. Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, along with other Sikh religious leaders, will not be attending the “Sarva Dharam Sammelan.” Instead, they will attend SGPC programs at various locations. The strained relationship between the Jathedar and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann following a recent exchange has politicized the spiritual atmosphere.
