Punjab: Playground, classroom as powerful as lecture hall

Punjab: The true purpose of education is to prepare young minds for life—to foster intellectual development as well as character, resilience, moral values, and a sense of responsibility. Over the years, it has become increasingly clear that children learn best when education goes beyond rote memorization and encourages curiosity, questioning, and reflection. When students are allowed to think freely and apply knowledge to real-life situations, learning becomes meaningful and lasting. Such an approach not only strengthens understanding but also develops critical thinking and decision-making skills essential for today’s world. The classroom lays the foundation for learning, but a child’s personality is equally strongly formed outside of it. A structured living environment is crucial in this process. For those living in hostels, dorm life teaches them independence, discipline, time management, cooperation, and empathy. Being together also helps students develop emotional maturity and social awareness, preparing them for their higher education pursuits and the responsibilities they will face as adults.
Year after year, our students serve the nation and society by becoming army officers, doctors, engineers, administrators, sportspersons, and professionals in various fields. Intellectual growth and physical fitness must be given equal importance. We firmly believe that the playground is as powerful a classroom as a lecture hall. Through regular training, professional coaching, and a culture that encourages participation, students can represent the country at the national and international levels in various sports disciplines. Sports foster resilience, teamwork, leadership, and the ability to accept both victory and defeat with grace—qualities that remain invaluable throughout life. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, improving memory, attention, and overall cognitive function. Studies show that students involved in sports often achieve better grades, improved attendance, and higher graduation rates. Sports help manage weight, build muscle strength, improve cardiovascular fitness, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. As educators, our responsibility goes beyond just creating ‘toppers’ or achievers. Sports reduce stress and anxiety, as well as improve overall mood and self-esteem. Regular exercise produces neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine—which improve mental health and neurogenesis.
