Punjab: The contribution of the late industrialist Bawa Paramjit Singh to the industrial development of Punjab is truly remarkable and must be remembered. It was due to his dedicated efforts that Goindwal Sahib became the country’s first industrial nucleus complex in 1980. Records show that Bawa Paramjit Singh maintained close liaison with Charanjit Chanana, the then Minister of State in the Ministry of Industries, to secure the Industrial Nucleus Complex for Goindwal Sahib. Bawa submitted 448 applications from interested entrepreneurs of the region who wanted to set up small-scale ancillary units. The first unit to be set up in the complex was ‘Bawa Shoe’, and the facility employed over 2,000 workers, mostly women.
Apart from his industrial initiatives, Bawa Paramjit Singh took steps to improve educational facilities for the children of workers and residents in Goindwal Sahib. He established the Amarpuri Public School, affiliated to the CBSE, which addressed the lack of quality educational facilities in the area. About 30 years ago, Bawa Paramjit Singh and his wife died in a car accident while travelling from Goindwal Sahib to their home in Jalandhar. Despite his untimely death, Bawa’s legacy lives on and entrepreneurs recognise and appreciate his services and contributions.
