Punjab: Man murdered due to ‘illicit’ relationship

Punjab: A man was beaten to death on suspicion of having an illicit relationship in Tibbi Bharai village adjoining Faridkot town late Sunday night. A friend of the deceased was seriously injured in the attack. Police have detained a woman from the village and her husband. It is alleged that the victim, 30-year-old Gurpreet Singh, was beaten to death by some villagers. It is alleged that Gurpreet, a resident of Dogar Basti in Faridkot, used to visit a woman’s house in Tibbi Bharai. Her husband objected to this. Late Sunday evening, Gurpreet had allegedly reached the woman’s house with a friend. 30-year-old Gurpreet had a heated argument with the woman’s family members. During the commotion, an elderly woman of the family died of shock. On hearing the news of the woman’s death, people of the village gathered at the house. Some villagers allegedly chased the victim and his friend. A scuffle broke out, in which Gurpreet died. His friend is admitted to Guru Govind Singh Medical College and Hospital here. DSP Tarlochan Singh said that the police is investigating the entire matter. Initial investigation has revealed that Gurpreet had been visiting the woman’s house for some time. The police have taken the couple into custody and started investigation.
