Punjab: Defying age, 66-year-old cyclist covered the distance of five planks in 63 days

Punjab: Defying age and setting an example of social responsibility, 66-year-old Mangal Singh Hundal has been cycling for the past 10 years to spread awareness about drug abuse. He received a rousing welcome at the Golden Gate today when he completed a 7,130-km journey by cycling across the five Takhts, the most revered spiritual centres in Sikhism. Hundal has been on a mission to make Punjab drug-free for the past 10 years and his cycle is a medium to spread his message to the people. Hundal, who hails from Amritsar, started his spiritual journey to the five Takhts on April 16 and completed it today at the Akal Takht. Turbinator Group Amritsar cyclist Sukhwinder Singh, who arrived specially on the occasion, celebrated his achievement. He said Mangal Singh is an example for Punjabi youth. Hundal, a retired government employee, completed the journey in 63 days. Hundal said, “Thanks to the Almighty, as he gave me the strength and perseverance to complete my journey without facing any major health challenges. I believe that if you are determined in your mind, the heart also follows you.” He first reached Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, Sabo Ki Talwandi from Sri Amritsar Sahib, where he paid obeisance at Takht Sri Abichal Nagar, Nanded, Hazur Sahib via Rajasthan, Gujarat and Mumbai. From here he started his journey to Takht Sri Patna Sahib and after paying obeisance at the birthplace of Sri Guru Gobind Singh there, he reached Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Anandpur Sahib via Paonta Sahib. From here he left for Amritsar. This was a different kind of pilgrimage for Mangal Singh. He said, “Our Gurus have taught us the principle of Seva, Kirtan, so everyone should do their duty towards their family, community and Sikhism. I think this was my way of following the path of the Gurus, praying for Punjab and its youth to return to prosperity.” He said more people interacted with him and came to know about his mission and support came from all quarters. He specially thanked the Gurdwara Management Committees, Sikh organisations and Sikh devotees for this visit.
