Punjab: Colleges ready for programs under National Education Policy

Punjab: With the University Grants Commission beginning the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, colleges have been asked to appoint three ambassadors each and set up help desks. Kanya Mahavidyalaya is among the first few colleges to be empanelled for the NEP Saarthi (Student Ambassadors for Academic Reforms to Transform Higher Education in India) project. The college will organise various activities to promote the objectives of NEP-2020. As a part of this initiative, the Saarthi Committee of KMV has set up a NEP-2020 Help Desk on the campus. The programme is aimed at creating awareness and encouraging students to learn in-depth about the transformative reforms proposed under NEP-2020. Principal Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi said, “UGC wants the project to start immediately. For this, the college has appointed Saarthi ambassadors Sanya, Anushka and Simran.
The team is conducting essay competitions to gather students’ opinions about the benefits of NEP and ways to spread awareness on the issue. We, on our part, have made these students a part of the institute’s decision-making process. They will also visit schools, their villages and localities and spread awareness about the new changes in higher education among the youth.” Handbills were distributed to the students depicting the features of NEP-2020. The students demonstrated their understanding of NEP-2020, highlighting key aspects such as holistic and multidisciplinary education, emphasis on critical thinking, introduction of mother tongue as medium of instruction and integration of vocational education. The slogans reflect students’ practical interpretations of how NEP-2020 envisions a learner-centric, flexible and inclusive education system with multiple entry and exit provisions. The programme instilled a deep understanding of NEP-2020 among the students and emphasised the importance of active participation of students in shaping the future of education. Principal Prof. Dwivedi appreciated the contribution of the students. He said, “We are expecting a good number of activities and projects for our students in the upcoming summer vacations also under the NEP SAARTHI project.”
