Punjab: Breaking stereotypes about autism

Punjab: World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 highlights the developmental disorder of variable severity, in which there is difficulty in social interaction due to restricted and repetitive thought and behaviour patterns. Ludhiana-based non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Darpan, Ashirvad, Innocent, Ek Prayas and Ekta are working towards the upliftment of children with special needs. The children are being encouraged to participate in a number of activities like cooking, art and craft and sports, etc. Autistic children can really excel in sports and participation brings many benefits, including improved physical and social skills and a sense of belonging. Special Olympics Bharat is hosting its National Roller Skating Championship at Leisure Valley, Sarabha Nagar in Ludhiana from March 29 to April 2, in which 110 athletes from 20 states will showcase their speed, skill and determination. Niranjan Kumar, founder member of NGO Darpan, said, “Determination, skill and passion are the driving forces behind every athlete.

These remarkable individuals also include athletes from the autism spectrum who have not only excelled in their favourite sport but have also broken stereotypes and inspired countless others.” Kulwinder Kaur, whose daughter participated in the skating championship, spoke about how being involved in a sport has given her daughter wings to fly and instilled another level of confidence in her. “I am happy that my daughter is engaged in sports and channelling her energy in the right direction,” she said. In March 2016, NGO Ashirwad and the district administration opened a canteen named “Sashakt” at the Ludhiana mini secretariat, run by persons with special abilities. The canteen became quite popular among officials, lawyers and visitors. However, the canteen was shut during the lockdown imposed in the wake of Covid-19 and could not be reopened even after things returned to normal. These NGOs regularly organise arts and crafts exhibitions around festivals and prepare candles, diyas and other gift items.
