Punjab: An arms recovery operation took a violent turn late Thursday night when a criminal accused of attempt to murder opened fire on a police team near Buhara village in SBS Nagar. The accused, identified as Amandeep, a resident of Garupur village (PS Aur), got injured in police retaliation. According to officials, a police team led by SHO SBS Nagar Abhishek Sharma tracked Amandeep to a canal in Buhara village where he had allegedly hidden a pistol used in a previous crime. During the operation, Amandeep suddenly overpowered the officers, took out the hidden weapon and opened fire on the police team. One bullet hit the SHO’s vehicle.
As the accused attempted to fire a second shot, the police personnel shot him in the leg in self-defence. He collapsed on the spot and was immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital in Nawanshahr. Security personnel have been deployed outside the hospital to prevent any untoward incident. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mehtab Singh confirmed the incident and said that Amandeep was earlier arrested in a case of attempt to murder under Section 307 of IPC and Arms Act. He also said that the accused has a criminal history and at least 11 cases are registered against him. A new FIR is being registered and further investigation is underway.
