Punjab: Answers to questions raised on procurement system

Punjab: Amidst questions surrounding wheat procurement in Punjab, the state government has clarified its position, stating that the procurement system is running smoothly and farmers are not facing any difficulties. The government dismissed the opposition’s allegations of delays as baseless. Recently, opposition leaders, particularly Sukhbir Singh Badal, alleged that the wheat procurement process in the state was being delayed, causing difficulties for farmers. They claimed that procurement was slow in many mandis and payments were also being delayed.

Responding to these allegations, a senior state minister stated that the government had already completed all necessary preparations for procurement. He stated that adequate procurement agencies are deployed in the mandis and timely procurement of farmers’ produce is being ensured. The minister further stated that millions of tons of wheat have been procured so far, and this process is continuing. He also clarified that farmers are being paid according to the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and that digital systems are being used to expedite the payment process. The government says that minor problems were encountered in some areas in the initial days, but they were quickly resolved. Administrative officials have been instructed to regularly inspect the markets and resolve any problems immediately.

Meanwhile, farmer organizations are offering mixed reactions. Some farmers say the procurement process is proceeding normally, while others still complain of delays and disruptions. However, the government claims that the overall situation is under control. Experts believe that it is normal for some problems to arise in the initial stages of the procurement season every year, but it is the responsibility of the administration to resolve them as quickly as possible. He suggested that monitoring mechanisms should be further strengthened to increase transparency and address farmers’ concerns. This issue has also heated up the political atmosphere, with the opposition constantly trying to corner the government, while the ruling party is busy touting its own superior arrangements. Currently, wheat procurement is underway in the state, and the coming days will reveal the accuracy of the government’s claims. Farmers are eager to receive fair prices and timely payment for their crops.
