New Delhi. A case of dowry harassment and murder in Delhi has once again shocked the society. Delhi Police constable Manish Bhati has been accused of murdering his wife Priyanka Bhati. Priyanka’s father has alleged that due to non-fulfillment of dowry demands, his daughter was being tortured for a long time and finally she was shot dead on the day of her birthday. Tears welled up in the eyes of father Ajit who reached the police station after his daughter’s death. She has demanded strict action from the police against the accused husband and his family. The father says that he never thought that the son-in-law to whom he had entrusted the responsibility of his daughter’s happiness, would take his life. Allegation of demanding dowry of Rs 50 lakh Priyanka’s father alleged that his daughter was being harassed for dowry ever since her marriage. He told that a demand of about Rs 50 lakh was made from the accused party. Even at the time of marriage, a huge amount was demanded, but the family was able to give only as per their capacity. Priyanka’s brother Nitin told that the accused Manish and his family had demanded Rs 25 lakh in cash for the marriage, but only Rs 15 lakh could be given by the maternal side. After this the in-laws started getting angry. Allegations of harassment from the next day of marriage The family says that Priyanka was troubled since her marriage. He had told his parents about his problems many times. Priyanka had also given a complaint to the Women’s Crime Branch in the year 2024, in which she had accused her husband and in-laws of assault and dowry harassment. In the complaint, she had alleged that the very next day of the marriage, her husband Manish came home under the influence of alcohol and assaulted her over dowry. She had also accused her mother-in-law and sister-in-law of abuse and harassment. Didn’t get good wishes on birthday Priyanka’s father told that the day of the incident was his daughter’s birthday. He had called her during the day and wished her happy birthday. During the conversation, Priyanka had told that husband Manish did not even wish her on her birthday. The father emotionally said that he did not know that the husband who would not even wish his wife a happy birthday would give her the gift of death. Demand for fair investigation from police Priyanka’s family has demanded a thorough investigation into the matter. The family alleges that Manish planned the incident in advance. He has also raised questions on the functioning of Delhi Police. The family questioned how Manish took his service pistol home despite being a police constable. He says that the weapon should have been deposited as per the rules, hence it should also be investigated. The family had complained earlier also Priyanka’s brother told that the family was aware of the problems his sister was facing. He said that if he had anticipated that the matter would become so serious, he would not have sent Priyanka to Delhi. The family alleged that Manish did not even contribute to the household expenses. To meet her needs, Priyanka started teaching in a private school and used to meet her expenses through that. At present the police is investigating the matter. All aspects related to the allegations against accused constable Manish Bhati, use of weapons and dowry harassment are being investigated. The family is demanding strict action against the accused and those associated with him.
