PONDA: Loose overhead live power wires pose threat to truck drivers in Borim

PONDA: A tragedy waiting to happen in Borim as trucks parked on the roadside could catch fire or drivers could get electrocuted after coming in contact with electric wires hanging close to the ground in Bethakhol, Borim.

In December last year, a truck parked on the roadside caught fire after coming in contact with an electrical line. Thankfully, there was no loss of life as the truck driver was not present inside the vehicle. Local people are demanding the electricity department to re-arrange the lines at a higher height.

Since the road has been widened, more space has become free, due to which truck drivers have started parking their vehicles here. After the Bethora Panchayat took action on roadside parking in Bethora as per the instructions of the South Goa District Collector, truck drivers have moved to the Bytakhol-Borim stretch.

Later, the Collector also banned parking of trucks on the Bethkhol-Kurti road, but this remained only on paper. Two months ago, the body of a local man was found in a pit near the road, following which local officials finally had to enforce the collector’s order.
