Poachers killed rhinoceros

Guwahati. A female one-horned rhinoceros was killed by suspected poachers in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve. The incident took place on Sunday night in the Agoratoli forest range, which is part of the Kaziranga National Park, officials said on Tuesday. Sonali Ghosh, director of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, said, “In Agoratoli forest range, forest guards found the carcass of a female rhinoceros near Maclung forest camp during routine patrolling. The body was sent for post-mortem. According to officials, it is believed that the poachers entered the national park by crossing the Brahmaputra river. These hunters specialize in catching and killing animals like rhinos.

They ran away taking the horn with them. After the incident, senior officials of Assam Forest Department visited the spot to investigate. He said there are CCTV cameras in most areas of the national park and they are watching the recorded videos. According to Sonali Ghosh, there was no case of poaching in Assam in 2022, the last case was reported in March last year. We are investigating it with an expert team and this is undoubtedly the first case of poaching in a year. We have not yet been able to identify the culprits behind this incident. For investigation purposes, a case will be registered under the Wildlife Protection Act. He claimed that in recent years, more security personnel and CCTV cameras have been installed in the protected forest areas with tighter security measures.
