Palakkad: In a brief chat with TNIE, BJP candidate in Alathur TN Sarasu talks about the surprises surrounding his candidature, the subsequent call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his ordeal as principal of Victoria College and the progress of his campaign. of.
You got a call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi a day after your candidature was announced. How did you feel?
It was an amazing experience. He asked me about my vision for the constituency. He promised strict action to clean up the cooperative banking sector. The PM also asked about the issues that I faced during my tenure as Principal of Victoria College.
On the day of your retirement, SFI prepared a symbolic graveyard for you at Victoria College. Eight SFI workers were arrested in connection with the incident. Do you still hold grudges?
Never. They are my students and I have forgiven their mistakes. Some left-leaning teachers with the support of SFI worked against me. But there was a section of teachers who supported my work. I was part of all the development work of the college, where I served for 23 years.
In Alathur you will challenge sitting MP Ramya Haridas and minister K Radhakrishnan. What’s on your mind?
What kind of development has taken place in the constituency? How much has been spent here over the years? Most of what has been invested is central funds, and yet he took credit for it. Also, what development plan does CPM have? What have they been doing since 2016? BJP has a development agenda and we will implement it.
Your candidacy was a surprise. How did this come about?
About a month ago, BJP state president K Surendran asked for my biodata. I have also heard discussion of other names. But I was surprised when BJP announced my name. I am happy that Modi chose me.
How is your campaign going?
The political environment has changed a lot in the last decade. The effect of BJP government is visible everywhere. People have welcomed me as part of their family. This is all related to Modi effect. The most important thing is that my students are also coming forward to support my campaign.
