PM Modi raises questions about the UN’s functioning

New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given an important statement regarding the changing global system and the functioning of the United Nations. Addressing the NDTV World Summit 2026 held in New Delhi on Thursday, October 22, the Prime Minister said that the world is changing rapidly, but many international organizations including the United Nations have lagged behind in adapting to these changes. He said that the current global system is struggling to provide effective solutions to today’s complex challenges. In such a situation, the world needs new thinking, strong international institutions and better cooperation. The Prime Minister stressed that the voice of developing countries should be given greater importance in the future global order and India is ready to play an important role in this.
PM Modi raised questions on UN borders
In his address, Prime Minister Modi mentioned the formation of the United Nations and its historical importance. He said that after the Second World War, the world had understood that the international system could not be run on the basis of military power and national interests alone.
At that time, the need for dialogue, cooperation and peaceful resolution of disputes between countries was felt. This thinking laid the foundation for the formation of the United Nations.
The Prime Minister said that the United Nations has played a role in promoting global peace and cooperation for decades. However, world conditions have changed with time.
New economic powers have emerged, technology has expanded, and international challenges have become more complex than ever before. Despite this, the decision-making system of many global organizations remains outdated.
Institutions are not able to keep pace with the changing world
The Prime Minister said that the world is passing through a phase where the old global order is changing, but the new order has not yet fully taken shape.
He described this situation as the World Between Orders i.e. the period between two global systems.
Modi said that when the real circumstances of the world change, but the methods of decision making remain the same, then the distance between institutions and real needs starts increasing.
According to him, this is the problem visible in the current global system.
He said that new powers are making their place and new countries want a more effective role in global decisions. Therefore, international organizations will have to improve according to the changing times.
Concern expressed on business and use of technology
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that in the era of globalization, trade, technology and sea routes were considered means to increase cooperation between countries.
But in the changing geopolitical circumstances, these same mediums are being used for pressure and strategic competition.
He said trade sanctions, technical controls and disputes over supply chains were affecting international relations.
The Prime Minister stressed that the world needs a system in which powerful countries cannot use their power to harm the interests of weaker countries.
For this it is necessary to make international rules and institutions more effective.
Mentioned Chanakya’s theory
In his address, the Prime Minister also mentioned the principles of ancient Indian thinker Chanakya.
He said that when rules and fair system weakens, then the powerful side starts dominating the weak side.
In this context he referred to the concept of Matsya Nyaya, which refers to a situation where a bigger fish swallows a smaller fish.
Modi said the aim of the global system should be to prevent such situations.
He stressed that the credibility of international organizations will be strengthened only when they take into account the interests of all countries, big and small.
Global South should get more representation
The Prime Minister also said something important about the role of developing countries.
He said that in the new world order, the voice of the Global South i.e. developing countries should get a more effective place.
The economic and strategic role of many countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America is continuously increasing.
In such a situation, their representation in global decision-making bodies should also be in accordance with the current circumstances.
The Prime Minister said that participation of all countries is necessary in the new global system.
He expressed the need for such international cooperation, which is not limited to mere announcements in times of crisis, but provides real assistance.
Reminded of the circumstances during the Corona epidemic
Prime Minister Modi also mentioned the challenges faced by the world during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said there was a great need for global cooperation during the pandemic, but many countries gave priority to their national interests.
This revealed lack of trust in the international system.
The Prime Minister reminded that in the year 2020 itself, he had stressed the need to create a new global order keeping human welfare at the center.
He said that the world needs such a system, which works to connect countries with each other in times of crisis.
He said that the real meaning of global cooperation is to help each other in difficult times.
Expressed confidence about India’s role
The Prime Minister said that India is continuously strengthening its capabilities in the changing world.
