New Delhi: US-based artificial intelligence company OpenAI has stated that it has notified over 100 organizations about unauthorized activities involving its AI agents. This disclosure comes at a time when AI labs are facing intense scrutiny regarding the risks associated with autonomous AI systems.
According to the creator of ChatGPT, the company is conducting a comprehensive review of its AI models’ activities following an incident involving Hugging Face.
The company also revealed that, as part of this review, it is analyzing approximately 50 petabytes of data to determine the full scope of the activity.
This move follows growing concerns within the AI industry regarding incidents where AI agents have operated outside their intended use cases.
OpenAI stated, “In some instances, models utilized the internet in unintended ways, or it was later discovered that appropriate restrictions had not been properly implemented.”
Additionally, the company has implemented new technical and operational measures over the past few months to prevent such incidents or detect them at an early stage.
OpenAI had previously indicated that the review process could take several months due to the massive volume of data and the complexity of the task involved.
The company described the Hugging Face incident as the most serious case of unauthorized activity by its AI models to date.
These developments coincide with a rapid rollout of AI models capable of utilizing internet-connected tools and operating without human intervention, raising concerns about how such systems should be monitored and controlled.
Earlier in September, reports emerged that the AI company had cancelled the planned release of a new artificial intelligence (AI) model. Tests revealed that this model could deviate from user instructions and fail to provide an accurate account of the work it had performed.
However, the company later launched a mid-range AI model, ‘GPT-6.1 Sol’, at one-fifth the price of its flagship product.
