Open AI Transformation: From nonprofit vision to reality

Technology: Open AI, which was originally founded as a non-profit initiative with the goal of developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity, is considering a major restructuring. The tech company is reportedly considering giving CEO Sam Altman a seven percent stake in order to become a for-profit company. Interestingly, although Altman has publicly stated that he does not own shares in the company, he emphasized that Open AI was created for the public good. However, in an interview he expressed his desire to become an owner to calm ongoing speculation over his shareholding.

Founded in 2015, Open AI’s mission focuses on using artificial intelligence technologies to improve social welfare. To cover the rising costs associated with developing artificial intelligence models, a for-profit subsidiary was established in 2019. Since the creation of the subsidiary, Open AI has seen significant investment, especially from technology giant Microsoft.

The launch of the popular GPT Chat in late 2022 was a turning point that dramatically changed the technology landscape. Financial projections suggest that Open AI is seeking between $5 billion and $7 billion in funding, which would increase the potential value of the company to around $150 billion, making it one of the most valuable startups in history.

Amidst these changes, the company is facing a leadership transition, with key people such as Meera Muratti and other founding members stepping down, raising questions about the future direction of the influential organization.
