One dead, 17 missing in Nepal floods

Kathmandu (IANS) | At least one person was killed and 17 others went missing in flash floods triggered by heavy rains in eastern Nepal’s Sankhuwasabha district. The local police gave this information on Sunday. Three more people were injured when the Hewa Khola river swelled due to heavy rains on Saturday night, District Police Officer Birendra Godar said.

The police officer said 18 of them were working for the under-construction Hewa Khola hydroelectric power plant, which was submerged in the flood. The police official said some houses, two vehicular bridges and some livestock were also washed away in the flood, reports Xinhua news agency.

The monsoon season usually begins in Nepal around mid-June, making the mountainous country more prone to floods and landslides causing loss of life and property.
