New Delhi: The Ministry of Culture will showcase the textile installation ‘Anant Sutra – The Endless Thread’ on the Duty Path on the occasion of Republic Day on January 26.
According to official sources, wooden frames will be placed behind the spectators sitting in the enclosures and around 1,900 sarees and curtains from every corner of the country, including Odisha’s Bomkai, will be displayed. It will have QR codes which can be scanned to know details about the weaving and embroidery art used in them.
Bomkai cloth is made using an additional weft technique on a pit loom, and combines the techniques of ikat and embroidery. The borders of the cloth often have contrasting colours, while the pallus is decorated with intricate thread work. These motifs are inspired by nature and tribal art.
Although it originates from Bomkai village in Ganjam district, it is mainly produced by the Bhulia community of Sonpur district.
Amita Prasad Sarbhai, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture, said that ‘Anant Sutra’, a spectacular display of sarees, weaves and embroideries from various states and union territories of India, is a visual delight that will form the backdrop of the seating area. Along the path of duty. “It is a tribute from the nation to the women power of India and the millions of weavers of India who have kept this eternal tradition alive by passing on the skills through generations,” he said.
