Bhubaneswar: A woman sub-inspector (SI) allegedly abducted an elderly man, who had brought bribery charges against her, in Odisha’s Gajapati district.
According to sources, SI Jyotsna Ray, who was then posted at Mohana police station, took a bribe of Rs 50,000 from Prerit Majhi of Nudruj village to release an auto-rickshaw seized for smuggling ganja. Majhi paid Rs 20,000 and lodged a complaint on April 25 when she did not release the auto thereafter. The matter then was resolved in the presence of the then Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) with the SI returning the bribe amount.
However, Ray later kidnapped the elderly man with the help of three of her associates and forced him to give in writing that the bribe allegation levelled against her was false. Majhi somehow managed to escape from the clutches of the abductors and lodged a complaint against them. “They took me to Kirama forest and asked me to write a note stating that the bribe demand was false,” he said.
While the SI has been transferred to the district headquarters after the matter came to the notice of the Superintendent of Police, an investigation is on into the kidnapping allegation, sources added.
