No new variant of corona infection in Tamil Nadu: Public Health Department

Tamil Nadu : The Public Health Department has said that no new variant of corona infection has been detected in Tamil Nadu.

It also said that the coronavirus genetic analysis test conducted last month detected the Omicron infection and its subtypes.

After Singapore and Hong Kong, coronavirus has been spreading in India for the last few weeks. The central government has released data showing an increase in the spread of infection in southern states including Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, widespread government-run COVID-19 tests have been stopped there. At the same time, tests conducted in private hospitals based on symptoms are confirming some people to be infected.

Subsequently, the Public Health Department collected sputum samples of people infected last April and sent them to a genetic testing laboratory in Pune for analysis. The results released recently confirmed that there was no new strain of the virus in them.

In this regard, public health officials said: Genetic analysis of the samples sent last month has revealed that they are all Omicron variants. In particular, its subtypes, including PA2 and JN1, have been detected. Therefore, the current outbreak in Tamil Nadu is not a new variant of infection.

If the new variant of corona had spread in May, the severity of infection could have increased or deaths could have occurred. There is no such situation. It does not create an atmosphere of panic or there is no need to increase testing.

Also, co-infected patients, children and the elderly should take extra precautions. He said that if preventive measures are followed, the number of cases will decrease in the next few days.
