Newborn baby sold in Thiruvananthapuram hospital for Rs 3 lakh, probe ordered

Thiruvananthapuram (IANS) | In a bizarre case at a prominent hospital in the heart of the Kerala capital, a newborn baby was sold to a woman for Rs 3 lakh and state health minister Veena George has ordered an inquiry into the matter.

The matter came to light when the Child Line team here received information about a child being sold and started investigating the matter.

Child Welfare Committee Chairperson Shaniba said that this has come to the fore from the efforts of Child Line.

“They, along with the woman who had taken possession of the newborn, appeared before us,” he said. On detailed questioning, the woman initially refused to believe that the child had been ‘bought’, later she Agreed that it was not her child, but that she had bought it.”

“The Special Branch Police is now probing the matter and details of how it happened will emerge and all those who sold the child and bought the child will be prosecuted under the Juvenile Justice Act.”

Shaniba said the CWCA has taken custody of the child and is taking full care of it.
