Kolkata (IANS) | A controversy erupted in West Bengal on Sunday over the Howrah district administration’s decision to assign election work to doctors in the upcoming panchayat polls. Some government doctors of Howrah district have been directed to join election duty.
The Association of Health Services Doctors, West Bengal has written a letter to the State Election Commission expressing its objection on this.
The association demanded to know how the district administration could allot them the work of presiding officer or polling officer. It said this is an unprecedented decision.
Meanwhile, the Howrah district administration called it an error.
Howrah Additional District Magistrate S. Pal said the instructions sent to the doctors would not be implemented.
Panchayat elections in the state are to be held on July 8. The counting of votes will take place on July 11.
