New biogas plant launched at CCBF in Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh: Promoting clean energy and sustainable practices, the Arunachal Pradesh government has commissioned a biogas plant at the Central Cattle Breeding Farm (CCBF) in Nirjuli, near Itanagar, with the aim of reducing dependence on LPG.

The project, designed under the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Dairy Development (AHV&DD), was initiated following the directives of Minister of State Gabriel D. Wangsu. The plant, with a capacity of 2 x 15 cubic meters (total 30 cubic meters), was rapidly commissioned and formally commissioned on March 27.
The CCBF has approximately 150 cattle, producing 5-6 quintals of dung daily. Previously, this waste was primarily used as fertilizer, but is now being converted into clean biogas for cooking and lighting. This process also produces a nutrient-rich slurry that can be used to improve soil fertility. This initiative has directly benefited more than 12 families living within the farm, whose kitchens are now connected to the biogas system, significantly reducing their dependence on LPG. Officials said the minister directed the project to be completed on time so that households can begin cooking with biogas.

The project was implemented in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh Energy Development Agency (APEDA), with senior officials including Commissioner R.K. Sharma and Secretary Y.V.V.J. Rajasekhar present at the inauguration.

Following the launch, Wangsu directed the department to expand capacity and prepare proposals to install similar biogas plants at other government farms. He emphasized that proper utilization of cattle waste can generate clean energy, reduce environmental pollution, promote organic farming, and reduce dependence on LPG.

Project Incharge Dr. Taba Heli described the initiative as an important step towards sustainable development, and emphasized its role in converting waste into valuable resources and promoting eco-friendly living.
