NCW condemns murder of woman on suspicion of witchcraft in Assam

New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has condemned the incident in which a group of six men attacked a woman with sharp weapons and burnt her to death for allegedly practicing witchcraft in Assam’s Sonitpur district. Poured.

NCW has also sought a detailed report on the incident from the concerned police officer.
NCW wrote in ‘X’, “Extremely disturbed by the horrific incident of brutally attacking and burning alive a 40-year-old tribal woman in Sonitpur, Assam on suspicion of witchcraft.”

“National Commission for Women strongly condemns this act of violence. Urge the concerned police officer to invoke provisions under IPC and Assam Witch Hunting Act against all the accused and ensure speedy, fair investigation. A detailed report including the FIR has been requested.” 4 days,” it added.

In a shocking incident, a group of six men attacked a 28-year-old woman with sharp weapons and burnt her for allegedly practicing witchcraft in Assam’s Sonitpur district, police said on Monday.
Police arrested four people in connection with the case and two others are still absconding.

According to Sonitpur district police, the incident took place on the night of December 24 at Ghagra Tea Estate near Bahbari under Tezpur police station.

Sonitpur district Additional Superintendent of Police Madhurima Das told ANI over phone that four people have been arrested so far and two others are absconding. “Three people were arrested on the night of December 24 and one was arrested on Monday. A case has been registered.” At Tezpur police station,” Madhurima Das said.
The police officer also said that at least six people were involved in this heinous crime.

According to reports, the victim has been identified as Sangeeta Kapi, a mother of three, who was beaten and burnt to death by a group of six people for allegedly practicing witchcraft.
The victim’s husband said the attackers branded her a ‘witch’, beat her up and set her on fire near their house.

After the incident the village head informed the police.
Later the body was sent to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.

In 2018, the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Act was enacted to prohibit witch hunting and provide more effective measures to protect and prevent persons from witch hunting.
