National Safe Motherhood Day is celebrated every year on April 11 with the aim of making people aware of women’s health during pregnancy. It aims to make pregnant women aware of the care they need to take before, during and after childbirth. On this occasion, let us know about those special health tips, which every pregnant woman should remember during her trimester.
first trimester
The first trimester is the period from the first day of the last period (menstruation) to the end of the 12th week. A lot happens during these first three months, which is extremely important to keep track of. During this, take special care of these things-
Increase the intake of folic acid supplements in the diet.
Eat more home cooked food rich in minerals and essential vitamins and proteins. Eat a variety of healthy foods that are rich in iron, calcium, and folate.
Consume frequent but small meals at regular intervals along with adequate fluid intake during the first trimester.
Continue with normal daily activities unless specifically instructed by your doctor.
Take plenty of rest during this. Get 8 hours of sleep at night and rest for at least 2 hours during the day.
Lie on the left side as this increases the blood supply to the foetus.
Walking is very important during this time, hence it is considered the best exercise for pregnant women. It helps in keeping your muscles toned.
Stay away from dehydration and stress.
Avoid taking any medicine without doctor’s advice, as doing so can be a health risk for the mother.
Also avoid consuming any junk food, as they lead to an increased risk of diabetes in pregnancy.
Consumption of smoking, alcohol and caffeine should be avoided.
Do not consume raw papaya and raw pineapple.
Avoid constipation-causing foods.
second and third trimester
The second trimester is from the end of the 13th week to the 26th week and is the safest and best time during the entire phase. Whereas, the third trimester is from the 27th week till the end of pregnancy. During this phase, a woman may experience more pain and swelling. During this, special care has to be taken of these things.
Have a high protein diet with enough milk and milk products. A balanced diet is very important for not gaining weight.
Staying hydrated is important, so make sure to drink fluids regularly.
Do regular exercise like yoga.
Prepare your home to welcome the new member.
Avoid excessive intake of alcohol, smoking and caffeine.
Avoid undercooked meat to prevent diseases such as toxoplasmosis and listeriosis.
Avoid any kind of sexual contact in the third trimester.
Wear comfortable clothing and flat footwear for the entire stage.
