Nagaland CM and others condemn racial attacks on women from the Northeast

Nagaland: State Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has strongly condemned the racial and physical attacks on women in the Northeast, including the incident involving a woman from Nagaland.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister said such acts are condemnable and have no place in society. Rio further said, “India’s unity in diversity must be maintained through tolerance, compassion, and respect.”
Health and Family Welfare Minister P. Paiwang Konyak also strongly condemned the racial and physical attack on a young doctor from Nagaland at AIIMS, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. In a social media post, Paiwang said racism and violence against women are “completely unacceptable and have no place in our society.” The minister expressed solidarity with the victim and demanded swift and decisive justice.
Meanwhile, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, expressed deep concern over the recent incident of alleged racial harassment of three young women from Arunachal Pradesh in Delhi, calling it “deeply shameful” and “unacceptable.” NPYF: The Nagaland State Unit of the National People’s Youth Front (NPYF)—the youth wing of the National People’s Party (NPP)—strongly condemned the recent incidents of sexual assault and racial harassment targeting women from the North-East region in different parts of the country.
In a press release, the NPYF cited an incident from February 22, 2026, in which a third-year resident doctor at AIIMS in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, was allegedly stalked by three miscreants who passed lewd comments and racial slurs related to her North-Eastern identity. One of the accused allegedly tried to intimidate her and made inappropriate physical contact with her before fleeing when she raised an alarm.
In a separate incident in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, three young women from Arunachal Pradesh were allegedly subjected to derogatory racial comments and harassment.
Describing these incidents as part of a disturbing pattern of discrimination against Northeastern citizens, especially women living outside the region, the National People’s Youth Front said such acts violate the fundamental rights to safety, dignity, and equality. While acknowledging the prompt registration of an FIR in the Gorakhpur case, the youth wing demanded swift arrests, impartial and timely investigations, and stringent punishment from the Uttar Pradesh and Delhi authorities.
NPYF also demanded enhanced security around institutions, strict enforcement of anti-harassment and discrimination laws, necessary awareness programs, and a dedicated grievance redressal system for Northeastern citizens in metropolitan cities. It appealed to the central government and the concerned states to take concrete preventive measures, stating that the safety of women and the dignity of Northeastern citizens cannot be compromised.
