More than 50 flights and many trains delayed in Delhi due to dense fog
New Delhi: Due to dense fog caused by falling mercury in the national capital on Wednesday morning, train and flight services were disrupted and a large number of passengers remained stranded at airports and railway stations.
Many flights to or from the national capital were delayed or canceled due to the prevailing weather.
According to flight tracking website Flightradar24, a total of 51 flights were delayed and 11 others were canceled at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
Speaking to ANI, a passenger at the Delhi airport said, “I flew from Goa. My flight was delayed by three hours due to fog. I did not expect that my arrival in the city would be so delayed.”
Meanwhile, domestic carrier IndiGo posted an advisory on social media platform X, informing passengers that flight departures and arrivals are likely to be affected due to the prevailing weather in Delhi and neighboring Chandigarh.
IndiGo posted, “#6ETravelAdvisory: Due to inclement weather in #Delhi and #Chandigarh, flight departures and arrivals are likely to be affected. Please check your flight details before leaving for the airport at http://bit.ly/2EjJGGT Check the status of.” X.
Sources said that between 9 pm on Tuesday and 7 am on Wednesday, five flights were diverted at Delhi airport, three flights were diverted to Jaipur and two each to Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
When visibility falls below 800 meters the airport initiates Low Visibility Procedures (LVP) – the aim of which is to make landing easier for flights.
Scenes from IGIA’s Terminal 3 showed the flights surrounded by fog as they lined up on the tarmac.
Delhi airport also issued a passenger advisory stating that flight services are likely to be affected due to the ongoing fog.
The advisory said, “While landings and takeoffs are continuing at Delhi airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may be affected. Passengers are requested to contact the respective airlines for updated flight information. In case of any Deeply sorry for the inconvenience.”
Airport officials introduced an anti-fog landing system, known as the CAT-llll Instrument Landing System (ILS). The CAT ILI system helps in precise approach and landing when visibility levels on the runway are low.
Meanwhile, passengers at Anand Vihar railway station also said that all Delhi-bound trains arrived late by eight hours.
Ankit, a passenger from Bihar, told ANI, “Our train was running late by 12-13 hours. The train was running slowly due to fog.”
Another passenger told ANI, “We reached very late. We were supposed to reach Delhi by 8.50 pm on Tuesday, but we reached the city at 5.30 am. If we had reached on time, we could have boarded the next train.”
According to the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northern Railway, a total of 23 trains coming to Delhi from different parts of the country are running late due to dense fog.
New Delhi-Moga Express, Bhagalpur-Anand Vihar Express, Ranikamalapati-Hazrat Nizamuddin Express, Banaras-New Delhi were delayed by more than two hours, while Puri-New Delhi Express, Hyderabad-New Delhi Express and Howrah-Kalka Express were running late. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the minimum temperature in the national capital to be 10 degrees Celsius on Wednesday morning.
The weather office further said that the minimum temperature recorded at the city’s Safdarjung Observatory in January was the second lowest temperature during the last 13 years.
