Punjab: The pace of monsoon has currently slowed down in Punjab, due to which heat and humidity have increased again in many parts of the state. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 8 districts in view of the rising temperature and humidity. However, it is a matter of relief that the Meteorological Department has indicated that the monsoon will become active again and the rains will return in the next few days.
Why did the heat increase?
Most parts of Punjab have not received good rainfall for the last few days. Despite the continued movement of clouds, the temperature remains above normal due to lack of adequate rainfall. Due to strong sunlight during the day and humidity in the air, people are facing humid heat.
Yellow alert in which districts?
According to the Meteorological Department, the districts where the effects of heat and humidity are likely to be greater include-
Amritsar
Tarn Taran
Gurdaspur
Jalandhar
Kapurthala
Ludhiana
Patiala
Sangrur
In these areas, the temperature is expected to remain high during the day and the heat index will increase.
When will we get relief?
According to IMD forecast, due to increased moisture from the Bay of Bengal and activation of the monsoon system, rainfall activities may increase over many parts of Punjab in the next 2–4 days. Initially, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain and heavy showers with thunder at some places.
After the rains return, the temperature is expected to drop and the humidity will reduce.
What is the signal for farmers?
The slowness of monsoon has increased the concern in paddy farming areas. Agricultural experts are advising farmers to-
Keep an eye on the moisture condition in the fields.
Make alternative arrangements for irrigation if necessary.
Plan agricultural operations as per weather updates.
If there is good rain in the next few days, the paddy crop can benefit.
Important precautions for people
During heat and humidity—
Avoid exposure to sunlight between 12 noon to 4 pm.
Drink enough water.
Wear light and cotton clothes.
Take special care of children and the elderly.
Use an umbrella or a hat when going out.
