Aizawl: The Mizoram government on Monday thanked the NITI Aayog for declaring the state the “Ginger Capital of India.”
A senior official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated that Chief Minister Lalduhoma chaired a meeting with members of the Mizoram Agricultural Marketing Board (MAMB) on Monday, where the panel thanked the NITI Aayog for declaring the state the “Ginger Capital of India.”
The meeting reviewed ongoing initiatives and evaluated reports on activities undertaken this year, including the high-level stakeholder consultation on Mizoram ginger production held in New Delhi on November 24.
According to the official, this consultation, jointly organized by the Mizoram government and NITI Aayog, is considered to be one of the largest official meetings ever held in the national capital, especially for the agenda related to Mizoram.
The November 24 consultation was attended by representatives from several central ministries, as well as over 60 investors involved in ginger trading, cultivation, and processing.
During the event, NITI Aayog declared Mizoram the “Ginger Capital” of India. This was done in recognition of the state’s high-quality ginger production and the rapid increase in ginger production in recent years.
At Monday’s meeting, MAMB members reiterated their commitment to ensuring safe and high-quality ginger production and stressed the need to further expand organic ginger cultivation.
According to a detailed report on annual procurement, more than 33.8 million kg of ginger was procured this year, and the full support price, amounting to ₹137.72 crore, has been fully disbursed.
The official said that MAMB is preparing to host a “Ginger Buyer-Seller Meet” at the Aizawl Club on December 5-6, with buyers from across India expected to participate.
This event is expected to lead to new trade agreements for the upcoming ginger crop. Meanwhile, a new ginger processing unit in Sairang is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 12th next year. Given the growing demand for dried ginger, Mizo technologies—Rapchung Technology and Tapchak Technology—for drying and curing ginger will be purchased under the Handholding Scheme.
For the upcoming harvesting season, all dried broomsticks will be purchased by ZOHANDCO, a Mizoram government company, at government-approved rates. Although broomsticks can also be sold in the open market, only supplies purchased by ZOHANDCO will be eligible for the government support price, as the corporation is able to purchase the entire product. Private broomstick traders will be required to obtain a Certificate of Origin from the Land Resources, Soil, and Water Conservation Department and use it to obtain a transit pass from the EF&CC.
The next major ginger procurement season will begin on February 2 and continue until May 31, 2026. Turmeric will be procured during February-March, while Aung and Mizo peppers will be procured from February to April. Procurement of Buhum (paddy) has already begun and will continue until January next year.
Monday’s meeting was attended by Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister P.C. Vanlalruata, Chief Minister’s Advisor Dr. K.C. Lalmalsawmzauva, and members of the MAMB.
