Minor rape victim hanged due to delay in police action

Barabanki (IANS) | A 16-year-old minor Dalit girl was found hanging in her house in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district, five days after she complained of attempted rape. Her family members alleged that the girl committed suicide due to the delay in arresting the accused and ridicule by them. He said that she was very depressed by the incident and decided to end her life.

According to the police, the girl’s mother first saw her body on Thursday.

The girl’s family informed the local village head, who then informed the police.

Barabanki Superintendent of Police (SP) Dinesh Kumar Singh said that on June 17, an FIR for attempt to rape under Indian Penal Code section 376/511 was registered at Haidergarh police station on the complaint of the girl.

He said the girl’s medical examination had already been done and her statement was to be recorded before a judicial magistrate on Thursday, but before that she committed suicide.

He said that Sub-Inspector Yogendra Pratap Singh, the investigating officer of the case, has been suspended for negligence in the investigation of the case and a departmental inquiry has been initiated against him.

He said a senior police officer has been asked to investigate the suicide and if needed, another case of abetment to suicide would be registered.

After the death of the girl child, the SP himself visited the spot after the outrage among the relatives and villagers.

He pacified the villagers by assuring them of strict action against the culprits.
