Biju Janata Dal (BJD)’s Debashish Samantrai and Subhashish Khuntia filed nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections on Tuesday. The process of filing nomination papers took place in the presence of BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik and several other senior BJD leaders.

Debashish Samantre was first elected on BJD ticket from Tirtol assembly constituency in 2000 and after Tirtol was reserved, he shifted to Cuttack-Barabati seat. He lost in 2019. There was discussion in political circles that Debashish wants to contest elections from Paradip assembly seat in 2024. But the party decided to hand over this responsibility to him.
When Shri Jagannath Temple Parikrama Prakalp started work in the initial days, Subhashish Khuntia also played an important role. Both Debashish and Subhashish are sure to become Rajya Sabha MPs for the first time. Both of them have been working for the party for many years and are staunch loyalists of the party.
Rajya Sabha elections in Odisha are scheduled to be held on February 27 to fill the seats of members retiring in April 2024. The report says that a detailed notification for this is going to be published today i.e. on Thursday.
The tenure of 56 members of the State Council, elected from 15 states, is set to expire upon their retirement in April 2024.

- Counting of votes – February 27, 2024 (Tuesday) at 05:00 pm
- Date before which elections will be completed – February 29, 2024 (Thursday)
The Election Commission has announced January 29, 2024, as the date for 56 Rajya Sabha election seats from 15 states. Elections will be held on 27 February.
