Militants kill 11, 23 injured in Manipur

Imphal (IANS) | At least 11 people were killed and 23 others injured in an attack by suspected militants in Manipur’s Khamlock village. The police gave this information on Wednesday. Heavily-armed terrorists attacked Khamlock village late on Tuesday night and fired indiscriminately with automatic weapons at villagers, killing nine people on the spot and injuring 25 others, a police official said.

Later, two of the injured succumbed to their injuries during treatment at the hospital.

The bodies have been kept at the mortuary of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, Porampat, Imphal.

Khamlock village is on the border of Meitei-dominated Imphal East district and tribal-dominated Kangpokpi district.

Paramilitary forces have been deployed in Khamlock after several people were killed in the recent violence.

The District Magistrates of Imphal East and Imphal West districts have withdrawn the curfew relaxations in view of the violence on Tuesday night. Generally, the curfew was being relaxed from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Violence between tribal and Meitei communities in Manipur continues since May 3. In this, more than 120 people have died so far while more than 350 have been injured. Several houses, government and private vehicles and properties have been damaged.
