MC creates record, collects Rs 37 crore property tax

Despite the weekend, Amritsar Municipal Corporation offices remained open on Saturday to collect property tax, pending water and sewerage bills and license fees as the financial year is set to end tomorrow.

The civic body has collected Rs 37.30 crore property tax so far in the financial year 2023-34, an all-time high. The MC had collected a total property tax of Rs 33.56 crore in the last financial year.
MC Commissioner Harpreet Singh claimed that the property tax wing of the civic body has set a new record with the highest ever collection of Rs 37.30 crore.
It has been claimed that property tax was being collected continuously over the past months and several buildings were sealed to induce property tax defaulters to clear their dues.
On the instructions of the MC Commissioner, property tax is being collected at all the zone offices of the Corporation and the Citizen Facilitation Centers at the main office of the Municipal Corporation at Ranjit Avenue, despite government holidays on these three days on March 29, 30 and 31.

The department is also accepting online payment of property tax at mseva.lgpunjab.gov.in. The corporation has collected property tax of more than Rs 1 crore over the weekend.
Municipal Corporation Commissioner said that there is still one day left to pay property tax without penalty. Those who have not paid their property tax for the financial year 2023-24 should make the payment on Sunday to avoid penalty and interest.
After March 31, defaulters will have to pay an additional 20 percent on the outstanding tax amount. Along with the fine, they will also have to pay one and a half percent interest per month.
