Massive fire at Srileathers showroom in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: A major fire broke out early Friday morning in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha. Panic gripped the area when a fire suddenly erupted at the ‘Sreeleathers’ showroom located near the city’s busy Rajmahal Square. Upon seeing thick smoke billowing from the showroom in the early hours, locals immediately alerted the fire department. Fire service teams arrived at the scene promptly and brought the blaze under control after several hours of strenuous effort. Timely action prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings, thereby averting a major disaster.

According to reports, people spotted smoke emanating from the Sreeleathers showroom near Rajmahal Square around 5:00 AM on Friday. Within a short time, the smoke intensified, and the fire began to spread inside the showroom. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, locals immediately informed the fire department and the police.

Upon receiving the alert, the first fire service team arrived at the site and commenced firefighting operations. Initial assessments revealed that the fire had engulfed a large quantity of flammable stock inside the showroom. Consequently, the fire was spreading rapidly, creating a need for additional resources to bring it under control.

Given the severity of the situation, the fire department immediately summoned fire tenders and personnel from other stations. Subsequently, multiple fire tenders and trained personnel launched a coordinated firefighting operation. The blaze was gradually brought under control through continuous water jets and the use of other firefighting equipment.

Officials stated that the fire brigade teams first focused on containing the fire within the showroom to prevent it from spreading to nearby commercial establishments and buildings. Rajmahal Square is a bustling commercial hub where numerous shops and establishments are situated in close proximity; hence, extra caution was exercised due to the risk of the fire spreading.

Thanks to the prompt action taken by the fire personnel, the fire was successfully brought under control in time. Officials stated that cooling operations continued for a considerable time even after the fire was fully extinguished to ensure that no smoldering embers could reignite.

According to preliminary information, the showroom was closed at the time of the incident; therefore, there are no reports of employees or customers being inside. So far, there have been no reports of injuries or casualties. However, it is feared that the stock inside—including shoes, leather goods, furniture, electronic appliances, and other items—has suffered extensive damage. The actual extent of the loss will be determined only after a detailed assessment.

The official cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained. Various possibilities, including a short circuit, are being investigated at this preliminary stage. The fire department and relevant agencies are inspecting the site and gathering evidence. The exact cause will be confirmed only after the investigation is complete.

Police arrived at the scene to manage security and control the movement of people in the vicinity. As a precautionary measure, the area surrounding the showroom was cordoned off for a while to ensure that relief and rescue operations proceeded without obstruction. The local administration also kept a close watch on the situation.

Eyewitnesses reported that people were alarmed when they suddenly saw thick smoke billowing from the showroom in the morning. Some stated that the volume of smoke was immense before the fire intensified, causing the surrounding area to become smoke-filled for a time. However, the situation was quickly brought under control thanks to the timely intervention of the fire department.

Fire department officials emphasized the critical importance of adhering to fire safety standards in commercial establishments. Measures such as regular electrical wiring inspections, the availability of fire extinguishers, emergency exit arrangements, and fire safety audits play a vital role in preventing potential accidents. Experts state that establishments storing large quantities of leather, plastic, packaging materials, or other flammable items face a relatively higher risk of fire. Therefore, implementing additional safety measures at such locations is essential.

The administration has confirmed that the fire has now been fully brought under control. The fire department and relevant investigative agencies are conducting a detailed inquiry into the cause of the incident, while the financial loss suffered by the showroom is also being assessed. Officials have stated that necessary action will be taken once the investigation report is received. This incident has once again highlighted the need for the effective implementation of fire safety measures in commercial establishments.
