Imphal: In a significant development on Friday, a coordinated security effort in Manipur successfully killed Ahibam Amorjit Singh, a 50-year-old member of the banned Army Popular de Liberation (EPL). The EPL serves as the armed wing of the banned Frente Popular Revolucionario (FPR). The detention took place around 6 am and was carried out by a joint team formed by Manipur and central security forces. Aheibam Amorjeet Singh, a resident of Kongba Kshetri Likai in Imphal East, was arrested during a mobile operation of registration and control on NH-2 at Mantripukhry Bazar. The arrest was part of ongoing efforts to maintain security and curb illegal activities in the area. The security team found incriminating documents, two mobile phones and some money from the prisoner’s possession. Preliminary investigation revealed their involvement in extorting money from three-wheelers plying on NH-2, which connects Imphal with Dimapur in Nagaland. Apparently, this illegal activity had been going on during the past months, raising concerns about the safety of passengers. The EPL, formed on 25 September 1978, has actively participated in guerrilla warfare as part of the insurgency in Manipur. The group advocates the restoration of Manipur’s lost sovereignty, which contributes to the complex socio-political landscape of the state. After the arrest, a case was registered to initiate further investigation on the activities and network of Ahibam Amorjit Singh. The joint security operation underscores the authorities’ commitment to address and destroy elements that contribute to illicit activities, particularly those associated with insurgent groups. This successful operation brings into relief the efforts of cooperation between the state and central security forces to deal with the security challenges in Manipur. Capture of incriminating evidence further strengthens the case against the detainees, which is an important step in maintaining law and order in the area. The joint efforts of the security forces exemplify a coordinated response aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region.
