Manipur: 6 underground cadres arrested in crackdown; arms seized

IMPHAL: In a crackdown operation against underground organizations and anti-social forces, a combined squad of central security forces and state police apprehended six cadres of various underground organizations from individual hideouts in Manipur valley districts.

The operation, launched in the last 24 hours, is a breakthrough against insurgency and illegal activities in the region.

Security forces seized one pistol with ammunition, a two-wheeler, six mobile phones with SIM cards, and some incriminating documents, such as demand letters for extortion, during the crackdown. These are important pieces of evidence linking the arrested to different illegal activities.

Six persons named in the police report include two cadres belonging to the illegal group PLA/RPF, two activists from Prepak-Progressive, and two members who represent the KCP-PWG affiliate.

The group was detained at their functional hideouts dispersed along the valley districts of Imphal West, Bishnupur, Imphal East, and Kakching. The ages of the detainees ranged from 24 to 50 years.

Subsequent inquiry has found the underground members in active extortion activities against the public and government servants. Their anti-social activities are a source of terror and upheaval in the area, triggering security forces to take strong actions against such personnel.

After their arrests, the suspects were produced in various courts following the registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) against them. Judicial proceedings have been launched to see that stringent action is taken against them by the relevant laws. The authorities are keen on disintegrating insurgent groups and establishing peace in the area.
